Shirley has lived in Davis for 15 years. She liked the environment for her son Justin (25) and daughter Julie (22). Both attended Emerson Junior High school as children. Julie is currently attending UC Berkley and Justin has already graduated from the University of San Diego. Julie enjoys ballet and ballroom dancing while Justin spent a year after college as a personal trainer and plans to help his father with one of the family’s businesses in the near future. The first family business originated in Ted’s family. His grandmother started a premium production and character licensing company back in the ‘60s. One of the company’s first and biggest clients was Charles Schultz, the creator of the Snoopy cartoon. As Ted puts it, “The family fortune is predicated on a cartoon dog”. The company, Determined Productions Inc, produces premiums for Macys, Kohls and even Wendy’s. The business that is currently Ted’s passion resides in Roy, New Mexico, roughly two hours from Santa Fe. Canadian River Cattle Company raises calves on a ranch in Nevada, ships them to the ranch in Roy where they are humanely processed according to Ted, into River Canyon Ranch Organic Beef.
They tell me they are not typical Davis people. She was born in New Mexico, but prefers life in Davis. He was born in San Mateo, but prefers the family ranch in Roy, New Mexico. They have what Ted calls a “commuting marriage”. While both agree that New Mexico is the place to be, Shirley just can’t let go of Davis. She enjoys the proximity Davis has to her daughter’s college, the
