With the spouses out of the house, the shots of Jack Daniels are poured, the poker chips are counted and the cards are dealt. The players hold their cards close and look to each other for the obvious tells they’ve come to expect after playing with each other, month after month.

Another cigar smoke-filled room, with testosterone inspired jokes and the wives watching the kids? Not here. This is women’s poker night at the South Davis house of Angela Scheuring.

Seven women , Stacey Zeigler, Kim Maslaniak, Kim Watson, Aimee Hasson, Moira Heilmann, Georgi Chambers, and Scheuring, have been playing together for two years and gather once a month at each other’s homes to eat, drink and play cards. Their abilities range from expert to novice, but fun is the name of the game.

One time, Stacey was so proud of one of her hands that she threw her cards on the table, pointed to her jack and yelled, “Jack High!” Well, she had the Jack, but not the pair. “Now we have a trophy we give to the winner each time, and it says, ‘Jack High!’” says Kim, a regular in the group.
