Benson’s lifestyle may have changed as she started a family, but never her passion for television. “I still wanted to do television and I also always wanted to work with kids, but didn’t ever want to be a teacher.”
Making children’s videos became a new way for Benson to incorporate the joys of motherhood with her experience and love for television production. “This was just such a perfect avenue for me. I could still do television and use my skills and work with kids. This was so much fun, doing the show, because I got to hang out with kids all day, including my own.”
Cheri produced “Blitz from Blop” locally, from her Davis home. She started Home Grown Vision in association with No Napkins Productions, so titled because, as all mothers know, “kids don’t like to use napkins.” Her vision is definitely home grown. With only her own home-made sets, a camera, and a computer, she filmed “Blitz from Blop” from her backyard, using all local children. “What I love about my show is that I have real kids get involved. I scripted them a bit, but for the most part I let them be who they were. I let them ask questions they wanted to ask because if those questions were coming to their minds then I’m sure it will be coming to other kids’ minds too.”
Cheri’s own daughter also played an integral role in the show’s production and filming. “My oldest daughter really inspired me, big time. In fact, she came up with her own character. She helped me build the set and she was right there with me hammering, sawing and sanding.”
Cheri’s daughter was not the only one who put in effort for the project. “The video is a family affair- my dad, my two brothers, my husband, my mother and my friends are all involved.” She’s not exaggerating; her brother Jimmy did
