On a Saturday afternoon in June, Cheri Gyuro Benson walks amongst a crowd of six year olds as alien Hayley Bop. Dressed in a shiny spacesuit, with purple wig and antennae, Cheri poses for pictures and carries around a puppet, Penta of Gon, one of her latest characters in her new children’s video, “Blitz from Blop.” As Cheri weaves through the pint-sized crowd awaiting the premier of the video, Benson’s 6-year-old daughter Hayley and fellow character, Pinky Martia, energetically hands out “Blitz from Blop” bookmarks.

The Davis Art Center fills with fidgeting youngsters, all waiting with anticipation to finally meet the aliens of planet Blop. As they munch on rice crispy treats and baby carrots, their parents whisper, “This could be the next Wiggles!” Cheri’s daughter Hayley stands on stage and timidly blurts, “Thank you for a wonderful four years,” as she scurries to hide behind her parents. As the show begins, Cheri slowly moves to the back of the room, watching her homegrown project finally reach a public audience.

Cheri, a mother of two, has come a long way from reporting for Fox 40 News. After working in television for 20 years, Cheri ultimately left the news room. “I had kids and I had to do something besides put myself in harm’s way, because that’s what I was always doing as a journalist, I was always in dangerous situations, and I had to think of my husband and my kids.”
